Community of a Burden Bearer

5/23/2021

  • What were some of the things your family valued growing up? Why do you think they were important for your family?
  • Read Acts 2:42-47
  • What caught your attention from this passage about the early Church?
  • The word devoted (Proskarterew) means to adhere to, steadfastly attentive unto, unremitting care, to be constantly ready for. What are some examples of things that people might be devoted to?
  • The early church was devoted to 4 things: the apostle’s teachings, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. Which of the four things in v42 do you find is the easiest for you to be devoted to? Which is the hardest?
  • In v43, it is revealed that people saw God was at work in their midst through the “signs” and wonders”. Where do you see God is at work in our midst at First Covenant?
  • Why do you think people were so quick to sell their possessions and give to those in need? How does (or should) this impact our desire and devotion to help those in our midst?
  • What does v46-47 reveal about what it likely felt like to be a part of the early Church? What description would you want written about what it feels like to be a part of our church community?
  • Pastor Mike shared that community matters to a burden bearer for the sake of care (meeting each other’s needs), accountability in following Christ, and fellowship (sharing experiences and creating a sense of togetherness or unity). How have you experienced these three things at First Covenant or even in your life group?
  • Challenge - what next steps do you need to take this week to be more devoted to your community as a burden bearer?

About Us
First Covenant Church is part of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC), which is a rapidly growing multi-ethnic denomination in the United States and Canada, with ministries on five continents of the world. Founded in 1885 by Swedish immigrants, the ECC values the Bible as the word of God, the gift of God's grace, and an ever-deepening spiritual life that comes through faith with Jesus Christ. We value the importance of extending God's love and compassion to a hurting world, and the strength that comes from unity within diversity.
