SUNDAY, APRIL 20 (8:30 & 10:00)
A large, heavy stone covered the tomb in which Jesus lay. But God “rolled it away.” This rolled-away stone serves not only as evidence of Jesus’ resurrection but also as an image of how God is “still rolling stones” in our lives today. We all have emotional, relational, and spiritual “tombs” that keep us trapped today, and the stones holding us in seem too large and heavy to move. But just as God rolled away the stone for Jesus, he is still rolling stones in our lives today—bringing freedom, renewal, and resurrection power.

WHY EASTER?
Easter marks the day of Jesus' resurrection from the grave. We celebrate it because how amazing is it that Jesus rose from the dead?! It really happened and faith in Jesus can change your life, too! Some claim that Easter is rooted in ancient pagan holidays. While the timing may be similar as other ancient celebrations and some elements such as bunnies and eggs have become associated with it (which of course makes it fun for our kids!), the only ancient holiday in which Easter has its roots is the Jewish Passover which was the Last Supper Jesus had with his disciples. Furthermore, Easter gets its name from the Old High German translation of the word "dawn" (eostarum) in Matthew 28:1 which was the moment when the women discovered the tomb was empty.
Matthew 28:1-7
"After the Sabbath, at DAWN on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

Palm SundaySunday, April 13, 8:30 & 10:00 AM
This day marks the day Jesus entered Jerusalem with everyone praising him, shouting, "Hosanna, in the Highest!" They were so excited, with great hope, that Jesus would be their king. They were hoping for a political king that would secure their nation's independence from the Romans. But little did they know the suffering that would come to Jesus and to them in the days ahead. You're invited to join us as we reflect on Jesus' invitation for us to "deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow him." |
