OUR MISSION

We’re all about loving Jesus and people
and learning to live His way.
We long to become more like Jesus by trusting him and following His teachings. This means loving people by offering compassion, grace, dignity, and care for one another. Together, we’re learning to embody His kingdom and live life the way He intended.

OUR COMMITMENTS

As we grow to be more like Jesus, we are committed to becoming the following.

Biblically Thoughtful

We see the complexities of life
and learn from the whole of Scripture.
We commit to thoughtful study of the, considering each passage in its historical, cultural, and literary context while asking how it points us toward Jesus and God’s kingdom. Because life is complex, we don’t use isolated verses to defend predetermined opinions or offer overly simple answers. We seek wisdom and guidance from the whole of Scripture, its story, and teachings. We want more than just knowledge about the Bible. We’re committed to letting God’s truth change how we think, love, and live. We welcome questions, encourage curiosity, and look for thoughtful conversation. This approach can be challenging, but it’s worth it.

Emotionally Healthy

We bring our whole selves to Jesus
for inner healing and growth.
Because Jesus heals our inner lives, we commit to growing both spiritually and emotionally by being honest about our feelings, wounds, fears, limitations, and unhealthy patterns. We don’t hide behind religious appearances and don’t pretend that faith eliminates grief, anxiety, conflict, or pain. We learn to face them with courage, wisdom, and support from God and others. We want to be more aware of our own biases, bad habits, and shortcomings while developing healthy spiritual practices that help us grow in maturity. We’re not fully there yet, but we’re learning.

Intentionally Relational

We grow closer to Jesus
by growing closer together.
God did not intend for us to do life alone. Healthy maturity is best formed in community with others. We commit to encourage one another, serve one another, carry one another’s burdens, confessing sins and offering forgiveness to one another. We offer opportunities for people to know and be known in worship, small groups, meals, social activities, and friendship. In a culture marked by isolation, we choose healthy Christian community, where each person not only finds belonging but helps others do the same. It isn’t easy and we make mistakes, but we’re growing together.

Graciously Welcoming

We welcome every person, every story,
and every step toward Jesus.
Because every person bears the image of God, we are committed to welcoming others with the same kindness, dignity, and grace that Jesus has shown us. We seek to make room for people of different backgrounds, experiences, abilities, perspectives, and stages of faith. We welcome committed Christians, spiritual seekers, doubters, and those who are reexamining their faith. This doesn’t mean we avoid truth or pretend differences don’t matter. It means we listen humbly, speak truth with grace, and love one another patiently. We’re not perfect, but we’re trying.

Compassionately Missional

We join Jesus in meeting real needs
and sharing real hope.
We commit to joining Jesus in bringing God’s love, healing, justice, and hope into the world. Compassion moves us to notice people, listen to their stories, understand their needs, and respond with mercy. Mission calls us to join God in making things right as we share the Gospel, love and serve our neighbors, welcome the stranger, care for the poor and vulnerable, confront injustice, and seek the good of our community. Wherever we are, we seek to help people know Jesus and experience his love and kingdom through us. We can’t do it all, but we’ll do what we can.

About Us
First Covenant Church is part of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC), which is a rapidly growing multi-ethnic denomination in the United States and Canada, with ministries on five continents of the world. Founded in 1885 by Swedish immigrants, the ECC values the Bible as the word of God, the gift of God's grace, and an ever-deepening spiritual life that comes through faith with Jesus Christ. We value the importance of extending God's love and compassion to a hurting world, and the strength that comes from unity within diversity.
