SHOULD WOMEN BE SILENT IN THE CHURCH?
Icebreaker
Can you think of a time when you were surprised by someone’s ability, especially when they didn’t fit the typical mold of what you were expecting? What did you learn from that experience?

Discussion
  1. What biblical examples support the idea that women held leadership roles in both the Old and New Testaments?
    1. Read Exodus 15:20 (Miriam), Judges 4-5 (Deborah), and Romans 16:7 (Junia).
    2. How do these examples challenge the idea that women should not lead in the church?
  2. How does the ministry of Jesus affirm the value of women as disciples and leaders?
    1. Read Luke 10:38-42 (Mary at Jesus’ feet) and John 4:27-30, 39-42 (Samaritan woman’s testimony).
    2. What does Jesus’ interaction with these women reveal about His view of their role in ministry?
  3. Read Joel 2:28-29 (quoted in Acts 2:16-18).
    1. What does the outpouring of the Holy Spirit here say about the role of men and women in ministry?
    2. How does this passage challenge gender-based restrictions on leadership and preaching?
  4. Read Galatians 3:28
    1. How does Paul’s teaching influence our understanding of gender equality in the church?
    2. What does it mean that “there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus”?
  5. Read 1 Corinthians 14:33-35, 39 (here are some helpful articles about this passage)
and 1 Timothy 2:11-12 (here are some helpful articles about this passage)
    1. How should we understand Paul's corrections here in light of their historical and cultural context?
    2. What evidence suggests that Paul was addressing specific issues rather than making a universal rule about women’s roles in church leadership?
Application
  1. For women:
    1. Have you ever experienced or witnessed a woman's call to leadership be squashed because she is a woman?
    2. Have you ever felt called to leadership or teaching in the church? If so, what has been your experience in pursuing that calling?
  2. How can we support and encourage women in leadership within our church and community?
  3. How can the church create an environment where both men and women feel empowered to use their spiritual gifts for the benefit of the whole body of Christ?
  4. What steps can you personally take to challenge misconceptions about gender roles in the church and advocate for biblical equality in ministry?

About Us
First Covenant Church is part of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC), which is a rapidly growing multi-ethnic denomination in the United States and Canada, with ministries on five continents of the world. Founded in 1885 by Swedish immigrants, the ECC values the Bible as the word of God, the gift of God's grace, and an ever-deepening spiritual life that comes through faith with Jesus Christ. We value the importance of extending God's love and compassion to a hurting world, and the strength that comes from unity within diversity.
